It looks like it'll be 3D which sounds awesome. So many coming out lately.
Looks as though it has great animation, and more importantly a great message. Kudos for hollywood! (LionsGate) I hope this starts a new trend of green conscious movies from the big guys!

Geez! I just checked who's in it and it looks like it's an all star cast: Evan
Rachel Wood, Brian Cox, Luke Wilson, David Cross, Justin Long, Amanda Peet, Dennis Quaid, James Garner, Chris Evans, Rosanna Arquette and Chad Allen! (whew, that was a mouthful!)

From that last one:
"There’s no reason for you to spend any time in Oregon, but if you attended the Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival this year, you might have been able to see Harmony, a new animated short film by SAIC’s own animation instructor and filmmaker, Jim Trainor. If you were luckier still, you might have also read this flattering review from The Portland Mercury following Trainor’s screening:

The word “experimental” can be scary to some, but there’s nothing to fear from experimental shorts—the good ones are perfect little self-contained gems; the bad ones are over before you get a chance to slit your wrists… Jim Trainor’s Harmony, for instance, is bad; an animated montage of hideous, morphing jungle animals and other weird images, backed by a voiceover that features lines like, “We cut a little boy’s penis open. We used a sharp knife. We wanted to give him a little vagina.” This is the kind of pointlessly offensive tripe that gives experimental film a bad name, but then it only lasts 12 minutes.
“I think that he just thought that I made it up just out of some perverse, private instinct of my own,” said Trainor about the genital mutilation scene in Harmony, which prompted the scathing review, “and it was clear to me that this particular reviewer just didn’t quite get it. But I also avow that I deliberately make my movies very hard to get. I mean, Harmony is a string of these ten vignettes that are each kind of horrible, and they each come from a dif-ferent perspective, so it continually throws the viewer off. I just think that smarter viewers realize that I’m not just doing it to be naughty or disgusting, that I’m pursuing an overall idea, but not everybody gets that.”

If you are at that place where you are trying to figure out how to make your website work for you and attract more visitors who return more than once, this is just what you need. This won't design your website for you, but you will walk away knowing exactly what you need to do in order to make it happen. After years and years of friends asking both of us these questions, we realized that a workshop would be the best way to provide answers at a price much more reasonable than a one-on-one consultation. So, two thumbs up from me, especially if you are one of the people who hits either of us up regularly on ways to improve your business and online presence.
Dear Friends,

It is a pleasure to announce that I will be leading a workshop on February 9th to help creative professionals make more effective websites.

After working on scores of websites, I've noticed that musicians, artists, and creative entreprenuers in general tend to share the same requirements for an effective website, and very often make the same mistakes when creating one. Many folks have approached me for advice on how they can enhance or improve their sites, and so it's with great excitement that I have decided to do a workshop to share my insight and expertise. My goal is to make sure attendees gain an understanding of the options, strategies, and resources at their disposal for creating an online presence that will help move their business forward, and leave ready to start implementing them right away.

More information on the workshop and tickets can be found at:
Hey animators,
A lot of you have still not entered your animated video to the Aniboom Awards animation competition. It’s definitely not too late to have a real chance of winning. There are 5 finalists each for November and December, plus 5 “golden tickets” that our judges will be giving out at the beginning of January. That’s 15 more finalists to be entered into the Finals round. With $50,000 worth of cash and prizes it’d be a shame to miss out.

It’s easy to enter – just upload your video.

When I was a kid back in the 1970s, I noticed that older animated cartoons like Bugs Bunny and Popeye were better drawn and better animated than current cartoons like The Superfriends and Scooby Doo. And at the time, I was like, "How can these old-fangled toons be better than the current toons since we supposedly live in a more advanced era than when those old-school toons first came out." Then for years, I came to terms with the notion that newer animated toons may never surpass the quality of their predecessors. But just recenty, I realized that animated cartoons today have equaled and even surpassed the quality of toons like Bugs Bunny and Popeye. I thought back to the early-to-mid 1990s and noticed that a lot of good-quality animated toons had been produced back then. That was around the time that The Little Mermaid debuted as well as The Simpsons, Toy Story and Reboot-- the first all-computer-animated weekly TV series.

With all that being the case, I'm very happy to know that today's toons are getting better, stronger and faster than the toons of previous eras. Today's toons are so well-crafted that even the lousy ones are good. Could this be because there's more use of computers in the animation process? Well whatever the reason, cartoons today are overall better than they were in the age of Bugs Bunny and Popeye. Or at least that's my opinion.

Beginning in March next year, we are inviting 9 people to cruise from Bodrum, Turkey along the Turkish coast, Cyprus, Athens, Alexandria on a share expenses basis (very, very inexpensive). We began a documentary in Paris and Turkey last year, and now as it gets warmer in Turkey we are going to complete it. We have a US distributor, and everyone involved will share in profits. It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months. Email me for details.

Of course I figured it may be many years before I could accomplish that, if at all. Later on, I realized I had a better chance of getting the miniseries broadcast if I made it a webcast. To that end, I've decided I should post the miniseries on You Tube. It's the perfect solution! I can post it when I want and have total creative freedom. And I don't have to worry about the corporate bottom line that so many mainstream broadcasters are focused on. Yup! If this works out, it'll further prove my belief that You Tube is the best thing since laser-beam-sliced bread! Meanwhile, I'll have to get started on this GYATM animation project if I want it to work.

The story is of an ego driven man who starts to feel guilt and regret in the form of nightmare and fantasy as he lives out his self-centered existence. The drawings should be very sketchy and will be done on either wax paper or thin butcher paper. The only colors will be black and red. No animation experience is necessary.
December 14, 2005–February 6, 2006

Film and Media Gallery, Titus 1 Lobby Gallery, Titus 2 Lobby Gallery, and throughout the first floor

In keeping with the Museum’s long tradition of presenting animation, this is the most extensive gallery exhibition that MoMA has ever devoted to the genre. Featuring over 500 works of original art on loan for the first time from Pixar Animation Studios, the show includes paintings, concept art, sculptures, and an array of digital installations. These works reveal the intricate, hands-on processes behind Pixar’s computer-generated films—including Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, and numerous shorts. The exhibition also includes a complete retrospective of Pixar films. Demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between traditional and digital media pioneered by the studio over its twenty-year history, Pixar: 20 Years of Animation is a tribute to the artists whose work has reinvented the genre.

The Yoshiko and Akio Morita Gallery features the world premiere of two media pieces that embody the intersection of art and science that distinguishes computer animation. Artscape, a widescreen projection created by artist/director Andrew Jimenez and sound designer Gary Rydstrom, invites viewers to experience, in the context of a digital installation, much of the handcrafted art shown elsewhere in the exhibition. Zoetrope is a dynamic installation, modeled on pre-cinema technology, which rotates character sculptures under a strobe light to simulate continuous motion.

The time has come for me to start modelling the characters, and for experimentation purposes I've bought some run-of-the-mill plasticene to practice with. My question is that when I'm ready I'm wondering what kind of materials to work with. I've had Van Aken clay suggested to me but can't seem to get it in Toronto (or order it online for that matter), and am wondering what other oil based clays might do the trick?

My second question is about the wireframe armature, specifically what guage of what kind of wire should I look at getting that will yeild ok and not break too easily? What do you use? Any information would be so useful!

Those of you who are into character animation in maya might find this tool interesting. http://www.jonhandhisdog.com/shh-life-er/?p=144

It's a tool to for planning your animation. It alows you to draw your animation using the mouse directly in the viewport and adjust the timing. Once you've nailed the animation using this tool you simply animate the scene in maya using the layered sketches from the greasepencil tool as guides.

I have been drawing for over 8 years now, and I had my heart set on being a classical animator (this being non-computer, just pencil & paper animation), but I am finding that 3D animation (ex:Pixar) has taken the world by storm and thinking to myself that classical animation seems to be dying. I figure I won't stand a chance getting a job in this specific field, does anyone have any thoughts on this? I suppose I could get into computer animation, but it really isn't my cup of tea.
I'm trying to make an exaggerated example of normal human motion, but it looks to me like a very confident tightrope walker.

Would one normally start with the feet when doing a cycle like this? I think I did it backwards, and I have a feeling that's why I'm having trouble with the legs.

Anybody have any good walk cycle tips? I've just been working from the tutorial on Geo's website.

I'd like to help out on low budget production by creating the sound score. I can compose comfortably in the styles of: classical, electronica, alternative rock, jazz, bossa nova, flamenco, mexican "oom pa", spy thriller, tv themes (IE.

I just got a job teaching a computer animation class at a local high school. Unfortunately, I have essentialy no experience with computer animation, although do I have lots of experience with 3-D solid modeling and surfacing from my engineering days.

Does anyone have any suggestions for software, areas to focus upon, and/or important skills for industry? This is an ROP class, so I need to try to give these kids some sort of experience that they can take out into the real world.

In the classroom, we have 25 800-MHz computers, with 512 Megs of RAM and software that may or may not be legal. After having a run-in with the Software Business Alliance at my last job, I've learned the value of having licensed software, so anything that is available for free would be the best (we have a really small budget). I know that there is a free edition of Maya available, but I'm not sure if it will be a good program to learn or if it will run on our machines. Also, I think that we should learn some 2-D animation as well, so what might be a good program to consider for that? Something that will do Flash???

Also, if you have any links to good places for me to start learning about computer animation, that would be most helpful.

Thanks!

Hey there

I'm in the process of developing a render workflow to emulate a claymation look on a project. I am using Soft.. XSI but will test 3ds max as well.

I am planning to use lots of soft shadows in a final gathering/global illumination set-up as well as some custom shaders... yes i am expecting long render times.

has anyone experimented with this type of look? I am testing the rendering only, not animation. I have seen some good examples on the net but there is a wealth of experience here in Tribe.

thanks yo!

I worked primarily on short experimental animations in college (The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA). Hand drawn. Simple lines. And all my stuff is in storage there (my body is in Tennessee), and in that heap of stuff is a nice drafting table with a lucite, acme-pegged animation drafting window cut in to it. Plus, I have something we've come to call The Oaksberry. But its pine. Its a wellmade wooden animation stand with horizontal and vertical movement capabilities (and backlighting), made as a collaboration with a woodworker friend.
I'm looking to see if anyone in that area might want to use it - for free, just come get it - indefinitely with the stipulation that, with advance warning, I can take it back someday.
Get in touch or pass the message on to an interested person. Thanks!

That story is inspiring to people...”
